Concussion & Traumatic Brain Injury Evaluation in Tampa
Head injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents are among the most commonly missed and underdiagnosed injuries in accident medicine. At Suncoast Spinemed, we provide comprehensive concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI) evaluation for accident patients — because a "normal" CT scan does not rule out a significant brain injury.
What Is a Concussion?
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a sudden impact or acceleration-deceleration force — exactly the type of force experienced in a motor vehicle collision. The brain moves within the skull, causing stretching and shearing of neural tissue that disrupts normal brain function.
Concussions do not always involve loss of consciousness. Many accident patients experience a concussion and are completely unaware of it — attributing their symptoms to stress, whiplash, or the general trauma of the accident.
Symptoms of Concussion After a Car Accident
Concussion symptoms may appear immediately or develop over hours to days following the accident. They include:
-
Headaches or pressure in the head
-
Dizziness, balance problems, or feeling "foggy"
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Sensitivity to light or noise
-
Blurred or double vision
-
Difficulty concentrating or remembering
-
Sleep disturbances — sleeping more or less than usual
-
Irritability, anxiety, or mood changes
-
Fatigue that is disproportionate to activity level
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms following a motor vehicle accident, a concussion evaluation is warranted regardless of whether you hit your head directly.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
Untreated concussions can develop into post-concussion syndrome — a condition in which symptoms persist for weeks, months, or longer. Early evaluation, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate management significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of prolonged symptoms.
Additionally, patients who sustain a second concussion before fully recovering from the first are at risk for second impact syndrome, a potentially serious condition. Early diagnosis allows for appropriate activity restrictions and monitoring during the recovery period.
Our Evaluation Approach
At Suncoast Spinemed, concussion evaluation includes a comprehensive history of the accident and symptom onset, neurological examination, assessment of cognitive function, balance and vestibular evaluation, and review of any existing imaging. Where clinically indicated, we coordinate referral to neurology for advanced evaluation and management.
Our clinical team has extensive experience evaluating and documenting traumatic brain injuries in the context of motor vehicle accidents, and understands the importance of thorough, well-documented clinical findings in the treatment and recovery of accident patients.
Don't Wait — Symptoms Can Be Subtle
Many accident patients dismiss concussion symptoms or are told by emergency room staff that their CT scan was normal and they are fine. A normal CT scan rules out bleeding and structural damage — it does not rule out concussion.
If you are experiencing symptoms consistent with concussion following a car accident, contact our office for an evaluation.
