Suncoast Spinemed's medical services are provided by Dr. Kevin Huffman, D.O. — a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine with more than 30 years of experience in injury care. Dr. Huffman provides medical oversight, evaluation, and pharmaceutical management as part of our comprehensive injury care team.

One of the most critical services Dr. Huffman provides is the Emergency Medical Condition (EMC) determination — a medical evaluation required under Florida's PIP insurance statute that directly affects how much of your insurance coverage you can access.

Why the EMC Determination Matters

Under Florida Statute 627.736, PIP insurance benefits are tiered based on the severity of your condition as determined by a qualified physician. Patients whose condition is determined to be an emergency medical condition (EMC) have access to up to $10,000 in PIP benefits. Without an EMC determination, benefits may be limited to $2,500 — a significant difference in your ability to access the care you need.

The EMC determination must be made by a physician, osteopathic physician, dentist, or certain advanced practice providers. At Suncoast Spinemed, Dr. Huffman is available to conduct this evaluation promptly — typically within 24 hours of your first contact with our office.

Dr. Huffman is available around the clock through Suncoast Spinemed's in-house telemedicine service. Accident patients can see Dr. Huffman virtually — from anywhere, at any time — for their EMC evaluation and ongoing medical management.

This is particularly valuable for patients who are experiencing significant pain or mobility limitations following their accident and cannot easily travel to a clinic, or for patients who need to meet Florida's 14-day evaluation deadline but face scheduling barriers.

Beyond the initial EMC evaluation, Dr. Huffman provides ongoing medical oversight for patients whose recovery requires pharmaceutical management, medical documentation, or coordination with specialist referrals. His involvement ensures that the medical dimension of your injury care is fully addressed alongside your chiropractic and rehabilitation treatment.

For patients who require specialist referrals — neurology, orthopedics, pain management — Dr. Huffman and Dr. Berns coordinate those referrals as part of your integrated care plan.
